CHALLENGE: The contract had to be carefully planned in advance in order to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses, manage traffic in the area, work safely over a tidal river and ensure the welfare of the local wildlife.
SOLUTION: The 96 metre long crossing was divided into five sections to accommodate the weight of the scaffold and equipment being used and the load-bearing constraints of the bridge.
The project was completed to the highest levels of safety by one of Bagnalls’ specialist industrial coatings teams which acknowledged the invaluable input from JFE Attridge who are specialists in scaffolding for complex and high-risk projects.
Each time a section of scaffold was erected, moved or dismantled, a rescue boat had to be deployed in the river for safety.
Each section had to be encapsulated to ensure a sealed work environment while the pipework was grit blasted prior to painting and the work was completed within the scheduled 18 week programme.
This particular project required special consideration for the natural environment as it spans the River Ribble and is home to a wide range of wildlife including a “romp” of otters.
